It’s no secret that I love to craft! I can spend hours flipping through Pinterest, or browsing through Michael’s for inspiration. I have an awesome craft room my husband created for me out of an oversized walk-in closet that has become my hideaway. Since my husband works crazy hours, and I’m typically plagued with insomnia, I tend to retreat to my craft room to keep myself entertained while everyone else is asleep. Thanks to my laptop and good headphones, I can bust through an entire season of Gilmore Girls while I work on Christmas ornaments, wreaths, or whatever crafts I’ve come up with lately.
But there’s nothing that makes me happier than inspiring others to tap into their inner crafter. I occasionally receive texts from friends with a picture of a crafted item and a message asking “Can you teach me to make this?” My answer is always yes!
What is A Super Saturday?
If you’ve ever been to a craft class, or Super Saturday of crafts then you know how fun it can be watching a group of people take one craft and add their own special touch, each turning out the same item, but uniquely different. I miss the days of attending or teaching Super Saturday’s at church.
What is Super Saturday you ask? Imagine a Saturday, in August or September where 20+ people gather to learn & create up to 10 different projects, for a very low cost, over a 6 – 8 hour period. Super Saturday was always a fun way to socialize, make new friends, and get a jump start on your holiday gifts!
So, this year, I decided to host my own Super Saturday at my home. I picked a range of classes from free holiday appetizer cooking, to $10 Christmas signs, and several ranges in between. There were items for Fall, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. I asked a couple of my fellow crafters to help out. My friend Jill taught us a fun, easy, soap making class. I made Chocolate Orange soap, and Green Tea Charcoal soap. Sue came in and assisted with painting projects while I taught the cooking classes. I made easy to assemble kits for anyone who couldn’t make it too.
Class Schedule
I created a class schedule with classes every hour so people could come and go depending on what classes they wanted to take and a few stayed for the day doing all the classes. I had about 22 women in total come and do at least 1 class.
Project Variety
I picked projects that had an array of techniques. I taught string art, which seemed to be the most daunting class for most of them. “It’s harder than it looks!”, was the comment I most heard in that class. Not all crafts are easy.
There were 3 different painted projects with vinyl applications, and a couple where I taught them to use the vinyl as a stencil to paint the sign instead.
Recipe Books
I made booklets of the recipes I was teaching for the Holiday appetizers, and the cookie classes so they could each go home and try them on their families. I loved getting the pictures texted the next day with the note “My family loved it!” attached.
Friends
It was so much fun hanging out with everyone and I loved seeing how they each put their own special touch on each project. The great thing about crafting is that you don’t need a ton of expensive projects. Just grab a piece of wood, some paint, and a few friends, and come up with your own crafts. Together, you can make Saturday, or any day Super!
